Psalm 8:3-4

Psalm 8:3-4

When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him
the son of man that you care for him?

What is man that you are mindful of him?
David asks this question in Psalm 8 while experiencing God’s creation.
I think it’s a fair question, one that I’ve asked before.

How is God mindful of me? Am I really significant to God?

I love to experience nature. I love to be an active participant in God’s masterpiece.

Mountains make me feel small and humbled, bodies of water make me feel peace, and big open skies remind me that I am handed an invitation to live in grace and freedom.

If anything, I often think of how beautiful creation is. I think of how mindful God was as he placed each star individually in the sky, and how he carefully let each snowflake fall on the mountain peak, and how he let bodies of water and the sky transform to different shades of blue and grey.

In Genesis 1, God’s response to his creation of the heavens and the earth and all the things in it, are that “it is good.

But then God creates us – man and woman, and look at what he does: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).

God created you and God created me in his perfect image. And the best part is, he doesn’t say that we are good, he says that we, as humans, made in His image, are very good.

We are very good to God. I am very good to God. You are very good to God.

So we look back at David’s question in Psalm 8. “What is man that you are mindful of him?”

Here’s the truth.

As you stand on a mountain peak, or swim in the middle of the ocean. As you count the twinkling stars, or watch the sun rise and set each day, and you stand in awe of God’s beauty…

God thinks we are more spectacular than all of that.
